In the aftermath of the Korean War (1950-1953), also referred to as "The Forgotten War," what started as one country ended as two. While those currently in South Korea enjoy life in an economically successful and democratic country, there are many in the north who are starving and suffering from political oppression. North Korean refugees are those who have tried to escape from North Korea to neighboring countries, such as China and Russia, to find an existence free of hunger, deprivation, and oppression. However, what they find is not the better life. Currently, North Koreans who have fled, or are fleeing, even though recognized as refugees by the United Nations, do not receive international protection and assistance. Without family or friends, these North Korean refugees must struggle to survive in a foreign land. In many cases, the refugees risk their lives in fleeing only to be forced to repatriate if caught by the foreign government. Those forced to return most likely receive harsh punishments or are put to death. Save North Korean Refugees (SNKR) was founded as a not-for-profit organization to aid and fight for the human rights of North Korean refugees. The missions of the organization are: - to inform the public about the plight of the North Korean people who have fled or are fleeing North Korea ("North Korean refugees") to avoid starvation and oppression - to campaign to collect signatures in such numbers as are necessary to support a petition to the United Nations for the protection of North Korean refugees - to campaign for the cessation of the forced repatriation of North Korean refugees - to oppose human rights violations being committed against North Korean refugees - to raise funds for humanitarian aid for North Korean refugees . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
