Save North Korean Refugees (SNKR) was founded by Henry Kim, a resident and citizen of the United States for the past two decades. Henry, however, is also Korean by ethnicity, and has experienced the horrific effects of the Korean War on his family. He fled from North Korea while still a child, only to be separated from his siblings in the midst of the chaos fueled by the oncoming war. Henry and his mother survived and took up residence in the South, not knowing what happened to those left behind. These (unfortunately, not uncommon) personal experiences led him to establish a not-for-profit organization to help those who are still suffering from the repercussions of the Korean War, those who are without food, shelter, and basic medical care in an age of amazing technology and incredible wealth. Henry founded SNKR in New York on June 28, 2000 for the purpose of petitioning the United Nations to recognize and enforce the refugee status of those fleeing North Korea, as well as to raise funds to help provide the basic necessities of life to those that have fled and are living in destitution and fear in foreign lands.
